Montgomerie Golf Club Dubai
About
A gorgeous links-style championship course with top-notch facilities
Just a short drive from the centre of Dubai is one of the premier golfing resorts in Dubai, the Montgomerie Golf Club Dubai in Emirates Hills. An immaculately-maintained links-style championship course set over 200 acres of lush fairways, landscaped gardens and picturesque lakes, the golfing challenge at Montgomerie Golf Club Dubai is matched only by the unbeatable service and hospitality.
The design of the course is exquisite and mimics a links golf course with wide, undulating fairways bordered by mounds and hollows. Right from the first hole, where you tee off towards the iconic Dubai skyline and attempt to avoid the tree that stands right in the middle of the fairway, you know you're in for something special.
The Front Nine
The 402-yard par-4 opener is a gentle start, despite the three bunkers surrounding the green. The soft dogleg second favours the natural fade, and the absence of bunkers means you should have a shot at a good score if you can find the fairway off the tee. At 473 yards, you best be on form with your driver on the meandering par-4 third, where two mighty blows, one a draw and the next a fade, are required to reach the putting surface in regulation.
The par-5 4th is probably your first realistic chance of a birdie. The fairway splits in two, but if you take the most direct route to the left you bring a pair of massive bunkers into play. The green is slightly raised, making reaching it in two a challenge, and an imposing complex of bunkers behind the green are ready to punish anything long.
On the 5th, four massive fairway bunkers threaten, with two in particular narrowing the fairway right where you'd hope your drive to end up, while the par-3 6th plays to a picturesque island green that's mercifully bunker-free.
The 7th is particularly memorable. A par-4 that doglegs around a lake, it features multiple massive fairway bunkers and only a narrow route to the green on what will be an exhilarating approach shot, with danger lurking both short of, and beyond, the green.
Despite its seven bunkers, the pretty par-3 8th should be a breeze, while the front nine ends with a challenging 595-yard monster rated as the second hardest hole on the course. With water all the way down the left side and a fairway that weaves and narrows as it doglegs to the left, it makes for a nervy drive. Another lake comes into play on the right in the latter half of the hole, and the fairway narrows to offer little margin for error for your second shot, while four bunkers guard the contoured, kidney-shaped green.
The Back Nine
The back nine at Montgomerie Golf Club Dubai opens with a triplet of par-4s before you reach one of the most iconic holes in Dubai golf, the par-3 13th. The shape of the hole represents the UAE itself, and there's a 360 degree teeing area, which allows for a completely different experience each time you play to the large island green.
The 14th is a long dogleg right par 5 with a massive, unusually-shaped bunker sat dead centre of the fairway just short of the green, while another pair of massive, beautifully-sculpted sand traps border the 15th fairway, which plays into a green that falls away to water at the back.
The last two holes provide a fitting climax to a round at the Montgomerie Golf Club Dubai. While the 17th, 204-yard par-3, features a large, unusual bunker short of the green five more sand traps beyond, the generous green means it is rated as one of the easiest holes on the course.
The last is truly something special, a 656-yard monster featuring an undulating island fairway that splits and meanders down towards a very large, shallow green. There are multiple ways to play this hole, but if you can find one that keeps your ball dry you'll be ahead of the game. The green is protected by four bunkers and depending on your angle of attack, little room for error. Depending on the position of the flag, you can even find yourself on the putting surface with no direct route to the hole. Regardless of your score here, you'll head back to the clubhouse with a smile on your face.
The Facilities
Beyond the course itself, the facilities are top notch. The impressive clubhouse features multiple restaurants, including a sports lounge overlooking the 18th and a tapas bar named Monty's for the eponymous designer of this amazing golf course. Overall, Montgomerie Golf Club Dubai is an absolute must-play for anyone embarking on a golf holiday in Dubai.
